Let us not be surprised by an aftermarket set to put a 2JZ engine in the 2020 Supra of Toyota. The chief engineer of the new Supra, Tetsuya Tada, already advised someone who planted such a swap to "buy the four-cylinder, it will be cheaper." What is surprising is that the kit is advertised before the Supra's have even gone on sale, and it comes from CX Racing. The tuning company offers a long list of equipment, but it is perhaps best known for the sale of turbochargers and plumbing on eBay.
Perhaps the company was also surprised by the reaction to the announcement of the 2JZ swap set. When CX Racing placed a view of a blue Supra with a blue tinted 2JZ that had fallen perfectly in the front bay, erosioners streamed from the hills. The biggest torment was that the B58, an engine that has only been in production since 2015, has not yet been adjusted to its limit, so why "trade in for a heavier, less efficient engine because of nostalgia?" Nobody knew that the B58 had so many defenders. We do not get the four-cylinder Supra in the US, so swaps will bring more B58 "s to the market for those who want to have their potential.
Admittedly, the B58 is a strong engine, with an aluminum block, closed deck and forged rods, pistons and stools. But it is a modular engine designed with compromises that can make extreme tunes more difficult and expensive, such as the fact that the air / water intercooler is integrated into the intake manifold. Meanwhile, the iron block, closed-deck, twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE was so thoroughly over-fabricated from its 321 hp that 600-hp tunes did not phase in. Some say that Toyota was planning to release the MkIV 600 horsepower from the factory. Even if that is not true, disassembly shows that the car manufacturer has made the engine powerful enough to process 900 hp without opening block or crater reliability. Shigeki Tomoyama, president of the Gazoo Racing division of Toyota, drives a 600 hp, carbon-based MkIV Supra to work.
But leave all that well. Logic is not a guide for exchange engines. Dreams, nostalgia, budgets and time do that. And everyone knows that this exchange will take place sooner than later. CX Racing says it is taking pre-orders now. In their view we see that they have added a MkIV wing to the Supra 2020. Maybe they have also selected the changes and equipment needed to install the M354 R154 manual six-speed gearbox.
