We knew that a Tesla Model 3 keychain would come thanks to an FCC application, now it's available for purchases via the EV-maker's website for $ 150. Or at least it was – the sleek, black clicker with the Tesla logo is already sold out. But, as Electrek points out, the miniature device has a huge catch: it has no "passive access". That is the ability to unlock the vehicle by simply accessing it with the key on you. It is a strange omission considering why it was in the first place.
About that: Until now, Model 3 owners have relied on their phones and Tesla key cards as the only ways to unlock their cars. Earlier this year, some owners started requesting a key ring as an alternative access method, similar to what is already available on the Model S and X. It turned out that not everyone was happy with the Bluetooth option to unlock the smartphone link with some Android users complaining about problems. The keychain had to solve this, but without passive access only the biggest haters of the old system will probably choose it.
In terms of controls, press the key fob once to lock your Model 3, twice to unlock, twice on the front or rear trunk to open and long press on the trunk to open the loading port. The device comes in a gift box that also carries the brand Tesla Model 3. There is no word about it when it's back in stock, so you just have to continue checking the site.
