Tesla FSD Can Allegedly Be Tricked Into Stopping Early For Bigger Stop Signs | Carscoops

Tesla drivers report problems with their vehicles’ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) stopping too early at certain intersections. According to some motorists, the cause is that the stop signs at these intersections are larger than average.

Twitter user @Cowcumber posted about the issue on August 21, as first noted by The Drive. The user said they were trying to figure out their “left turn from hell” with their Tesla “delaying WAY too early (so far I HAVE to cancel so as not to fall behind).”

The user eventually got so sick of it that they broke out a tape measure and found that the sign was 123cm in size, much larger than the other stop signs in their area, which were only 76cm. ) big.

This morning I put 2 and 2 together to figure out my left turn problem. The car brakes WAY too early (so far back that I HAVE to cancel so as not to fall behind). It turns out to be the size of the stop signs. They are streets on the surface but at the end of a freeway from the driveway pic.twitter.com/1zF6XSoC3d

@Cowcumber then stated that the sign was about 60 percent larger than the standard stop signs, and that it was interpreted as 60 percent closer, causing the car to tangle and brake prematurely.

It’s unclear if this is in fact the cause of the problem, and others in the thread have argued that a Tesla’s cameras wouldn’t interpret images this way. @Cowcumber isn’t the first to notice the problem though.

Another commenter, @AlaniMike, wrote that he had the same problem, claiming that his vehicle always brakes hard at intersections near his home, showing “multiple stop signs incorrectly marked”.

I have the same problem near my house, there is always hard braking and multiple stop signs are also displayed incorrectly https://t.co/C1nBAJA6NQ

In a video posted by the Whole Mars Catalog YouTube channel, the driver of a Tesla using FSD Beta 10.69 talked about the same problem in their vehicle.

“It used to have this problem with stopping at these stop signs because this street has giant stop signs,” they said. “And so it tried to stop a little too early because the stop signs were so big and I realized, ‘Okay, size is a big part of how it does that sort of thing.’ And you see, it does that a little bit here too, maybe.”

Although the driver claims that the problem has been improved with the latest update, it still persists. While the reasons for the problem are unknown, it is just one of many that have plagued Tesla’s ADAS systems.

The automaker has been criticized for the way it has rolled out both Autopilot and FSD. The system is under investigation by federal regulators, is the subject of a complaint from the California DMV, and has been called dangerous by critics.
