Peugeot 208 Hearse is the least expected ride for a funeral

Over the years we’ve seen many unusual vehicles converted into funeral cars, but the Peugeot 208 hearse pictured easily fits into the top five. The one-off vehicle available in Argentina is one of the strangest options for escorting you to your final place of residence.

The French supermini was chosen as the donor car for the conversion by Carrozados Rosano, based in the city of Córdoba in Argentina. Interestingly, this isn’t the company’s first time converting a 208 into a hearse, as they did on the previous generation.

The front part of the vehicle, including the bumper, headlamps, grille, hood, front fenders and front doors, has been carried over from the regular Peugeot 208, and more specifically the entry trim as suggested by the blocked fangs and the halogen lights off. The same goes for the wheels, rear bumper and taillights, which remain virtually unchanged. However, that’s where the similarities end, with everything else being custom made.

The most obvious change is the significantly extended wheelbase, which required changes to the model’s CMP architecture. This makes the 208 hearse longer than any other Peugeot, including the 408 crossover, the 508 sedan and the 5008 SUV. The roof of the vehicle has been extended, giving more headroom and improving proportions somewhat, although the 15-inch wheel covers don’t help with the latter.

Unsurprisingly, the five-door hatchback has been converted to a three-door body style as no one would use the rear doors, with the custom body panels on the profile following the lines of the original. The tailgate is also custom made, which makes up for the extra height.

Inside, the highlight is a textured stainless steel bed at the rear, designed to accommodate any chest. The LED lighting and the Napa leather upholstery create a luxurious atmosphere.

The base spec Peugeot 208 in Argentina is equipped with a naturally aspirated 1.2-liter three-cylinder Puretech petrol engine with an output of 82 hp (61 kW / 83 hp) and a torque of 118 Nm (87 lb-ft). This engine is widely used by Stellantis models in various tuning levels, but in this case the lack of a turbo combined with the heavier body of the hearse will likely result in less than ideal specs. Still, performance is not a priority in this case, so there will be no complaints.

We don’t know the cost of the Peugeot 208 hearse, but we suspect one of the reasons the company chose the supermini is affordability, as most funeral-friendly conversions are based on larger and often significantly more expensive vehicles.
