It is not uncommon to see reports of stolen classic Porsches on social media nowadays, especially since 911 values and auction prices are sky-high. Porsche is now taking measures to prevent theft of classic Porsches with anti-theft systems that are geared to its older vehicles.
Porsche's Classic Vehicle Tracking System consists of hidden sensors around the car, connected to a Europe-wide security network. According to the manufacturer, all older Porsches can be equipped with the setup, from vintage, six-volt 356s to the Carrera GT.
According to Porsche, the hidden hardware is extremely time-consuming to remove from the vehicle, and any attempted tampering will cause the owner to receive a notification via the anti-theft system's mobile app. An alarm can of course also be heard, even when there is an attempt to disable the security system by removing the battery from the car. However, if the car is stolen successfully and the owner confirms it via the app, the system informs the authorities and follows the GPS monitoring of the vehicle. The use of GPS jammers will also activate the alarm. It can also remotely prevent the engine from being restarted, a measure that can only be undone by authorized Porsche security system installers in Porsche Centers. The availability in the US for the anti-theft system has not yet been announced.
The system takes between one and four hours to install, and Porsche says it is about 1,000 euros ($ 1,140) to fit, with a monthly service charge of 20 euros ($ 23). Maybe that's a small compensation for a good night's sleep.
Porsche also offers a "Bear-Lock" lock for its future classic models, such as the 986 and 987 and the 997. If there is enough interest, other models will also offer suitable switches for other models. The lock is simple but effective: on manual models it locks the car in reverse, and on automatic models the device prevents the shifter from being removed from Park.
