Rumors of what a next-generation Ford Mustang will and won’t be flying around in the years leading up to the car’s debut. This upcoming seventh generation is no exception, but speculation will soon settle down when Ford officially unveils the car at the Detroit Auto Show on September 14.
In preparation for the big reveal, we’re bringing together everything we know about the new 2024 Mustang in one convenient place. As we approach the day, we’ll be constantly updating this post with new teasers and collected information, so be sure to check back for the latest on what Ford is internally calling the “S650” generation of Mustang.
Starting off with what we know, Ford has confirmed that the new Mustang will be available with a six-speed manual transmission. It said so much via a teaser showing a six-speed shift pattern in the letter “O”.
Ford hasn’t had any massive missteps when it comes to seventh-generation Mustang design leaks, so these cloaked spy photos are about as good as it gets for seeing what the new car will look like. The camouflage on this prototype is extensive, but we can see the lines of a long hood, 2+2 coupe lurking beneath all that vinyl and fabric.
Here’s a great look at the Mustang’s new interior before you should see it. Be sure to click through the gallery to see every last detail. We can easily see that this new Mustang will be more technical than the previous one, but will still retain some Mustang normalities, such as the shifter design. Larger screens will be smeared across the dashboard and there will be fewer buttons everywhere, which is an ongoing trend in the industry in general.
This teaser comes out a week before the big reveal, and while it doesn’t reveal much, it confirms the presence of a GT Performance model at launch. Ford has been offering different levels of Performance Packs on the Mustang for a while now, and it looks like the trend will continue for the seventh-generation car. We also note that this is the first time Ford has placed the word ‘Performance’ in the GT logo.
A more recent rumored story and citing unnamed sources tells us the Mustang could have just under 500 horsepower when unveiled. That would be more than what it makes now, which is no surprise with the introduction of a new generation car. Again, however, this is not confirmed information, so pay attention during the reveal night.
For years prior to this week, we’ve reported several rumors and reports about the Mustang using a hybrid powertrain that may give it four-wheel drive, but this one report a week before its unveiling puts those rumors to bed. If true, all the buzz about wild electrified powertrains is for nothing. Instead, it looks much more likely that Ford will offer a similar powertrain as in the outgoing Mustang: a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and a 5.0-liter V8. Frankly, we think that’s fine!
Note that this post will be updated with more information leading up to the unveiling of the next generation Ford Mustang.
