The bits and bobs we saw on the Toyota Supra TRD Performance Line Concept are ready for primetime. TRD posted them on Facebook last week and at least one Japanese dealer showed the handiwork on a Supra show floor. The good news is that they look just as good as the concept, made from carbon-fiber reinforced plastic and given a glossy coating over a perfect weave. The bad news is that they probably won't be the least cheap.
A three-part pre-splitter distracts things. It increases the downward force and reduces the lift, but also lowers the car by 14 millimeters (0.55 inch). The rocker extensions wear shark fins on their front and rear edges, to distribute the air flow along the body and around the three-quarter round. They also lower the ride height by four millimeters (0.16 inches). Above them, a set of CFRP panels on the door closes the side intakes. The chief engineer of the coupe said that the standard cooling system of the Supra is good enough, the vents there in case aftermarket mods need more air.
A rear spoiler stands guard at the rear of the deck member, above a diffuser that runs around the rear of the rear fenders in side spoilers. This diffuser has the greatest effect on ground clearance and reduces the driving height by 24 mm (0.95 inch). The CFRP mirror caps are for show only, as are the 20-spoke, 19-inch forged aluminum wheels black and sanded in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The front wheels are nine centimeters wide, the following eight centimeters.
A forum member at SuperMkV did a straight yen-to-dollar conversion on the parts based on prices from a dealer website. For the front splitter, side skirts, rear spoilers, trunk spoiler, diffuser, door trim, wheels and wheel locks, the total was $ 23,522. Even if the price for our market were cut in half, that money would buy a lot of up-to-date performance-enhancing treats – maybe even a 2JZ-GTE for anyone ready to do a lot of their own whipping.
We look forward to the financial details when TRD decides to take over the components. It should not take long.
