We do not get the Volkswagen Amarok in America, but that does not stop us from yearning for this one-off truck designed for life in the Arctic Circle. Called the Amarok AT35, this truck started as a normal Amarok before VW handed it to the people at Arctic Trucks – an appropriate name for the project they took on themselves. The goal of life is to cross the ice-cold wasteland of Iceland because it supports the winter experience for customers.
To accomplish this task, Arctic Trucks gave him a one-inch lift and huge 315 / 70R17 tires on larger wheels. Some larger fiberglass wheel arches are fitted to accommodate the larger tires, giving the truck an even broader position and appearance. Larger mudflaps front and rear have been added to complete the appearance. We do not see this kind of tough Volkswagens often, but we love how this comes out as average and ready for action.
Arctic Trucks also spent a lot of time preparing the interior on the northern tundra in Iceland. A portable generator is on board, but the wildest bit is a cappuccino machine. Yes, if you are thirsty and cold without Starbucks for the next 300 miles, this truck has you covered. Other additions include a fire extinguisher, VHF radio, tool box, first aid kit and a jack and work light in case something goes wrong.
The powertrain has not been touched; VW's 3.0-liter V6 diesel is under the hood. This engine produces 221 hp and 428 pound-foot torque – more than enough for some ice cruising. There are no plans in the making for the VW Amarok to find its way to the US now, but Ford and VW have just announced a truck / van alliance at the Detroit Auto Show on Tuesday this week. Part of the plan involved the delivery of truck platforms by Ford for both companies in 2022, so VW appears to be more promising at the front of the trucks.
