Toyota announced on Wednesday that it will be selling a TRD-branded factory lift kit for its Tacoma midsize pickup. Not only is this new kit TRD approved and backed by a manufacturer’s warranty, but it is also fully compatible with the new Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) technology offered on the Tacoma since the 2020 model year.
The kit is compatible with all four-wheel drive V6 models, except the long bed variant and the TRD Pro (which shouldn’t need one at first). Toyota says it’s good for a two-inch lift in the front and about an inch in the back. The kit also comes with a TRD style grille replacement, which is more than just an aesthetic upgrade.
“The kit contains a new one [TSS] system millimeter wave sensor (and new camera support bracket) designed to fit snugly into the grille to maintain the functionality of the TSS system once the kit is installed, “says Toyota.” This is the only lift kit that has been validated to be fully TSS compliant. Also included are two matching black bezels that fill in the removed fog lights and complement the TRD Pro-style grille. “
You will notice that we did not say anything above about two-wheel drive or four-cylinder models. Toyota’s announcement explicitly excludes them. We got in touch to ask if there are plans to offer an equivalent kit or a separate package with just the grille and components to make a non-factory elevator compatible with TSS. We will update this post if we hear anything.
While you’re still on board, the kit retails for $ 1,350 (plus 4 to 5 hours of labor, Toyota estimates) and is available exclusively as a dealer-installed package, so you probably won’t be able to just order one at eBay. It is backed by a 3 year / 36,000 miles parts warranty when installed prior to delivery, or a 1 year / 12,000 miles parts warranty when installed on a truck already owned by the customer.
