Thankfully, our long-term 2022 Kia EV6 has a moonroof, not a glass roof

Our Kia long-term EV6 for 2022 doesn’t have a glass roof, and I certainly love that. Rather than jump on the glass-roof trend like many EVs have — no doubt in response to Tesla — the EV6 GT-Line uses a nice and big moonroof.

I’ve always been a big believer in incorporating a sunroof into cars. Making the sky a part of your ride is just fun, and I love being able to both look out and feel the breeze coming in through the roof. However, the trend with new EVs has been to offer a fixed glass roof as the only option. This sucks.

I’ll probably explore this more in a longer op-ed about the proliferation of glass roofs, but every time I’ve been in a car with a car, it hasn’t been fun. The sun is brutal and relentless, and even with glass meant to shield you from that blazing fireball, it can be off-putting. Depending on the car and the specific glass roof, you can still feel the heat of the sun through it. Passengers in the back seat will be at odd angles to the sun, putting them right in their field of view with no visor to block it. However, it is only terrible if there is no shade that can be extended to protect you from the sun, which is the case with a number of vehicles. Finally, I abhor the fact that you have this big piece of glass over your head, but can’t really open it to the outside world. Give me the moon cover!

And that’s exactly what the EV6 offers. It’s a nice, wide pane of glass that covers the front passenger compartment and opens to let in fresh air. If you want to keep the sun out or just darken the interior, there is a beautiful awning that can give you a full roof. Coverage. This is exactly how it should be. And sure, I dig a good panoramic sunroof too, but those are all more expensive and heavier on the car roof than a traditional sunroof. The EV6’s setup is the best place for me, and it’s made summer driving all the more enjoyable.
