Seventh-generation Ford Mustang GT unveiled for Australian Supercars Championship

The new Ford Mustang GT Supercar, based on the seventh generation model and made for the Australian Supercars series, has been unveiled at the famous Bathurst 1000 endurance race.

Brought to life by Ford Performance and Dick Johnson Racing, the Mustang Supercar will make its competitive debut at the start of the 2023 season as part of the new ‘Gen3’ regulations. It will be raced by Dick Johnson Racing, Tickford Racing, Grove Racing, Blanchard Racing Team and Walkinshaw Andretti United in the championship.

While the main technical specs of the race car remain secret, we know that it is closer to its brother on the road than previous iterations built for the series. In fact, it’s powered by a production-based Coyote V8, albeit one that’s been upgraded to deliver over 600 horsepower.

“It’s fantastic to be able to show the seventh-generation Mustang in race form for the first time worldwide for the first time,” said Mark Rushbrook, general manager of Ford Performance Motorsports. “The unveiling of the Mustang Supercar is the first of many, with Mustang racing globally in GT3, GT4, NASCAR and NHRA competitions. Mustang has been an iconic brand on and off the track for 58 years and its legend will endure around the world. We always say that Mustang was born to race, and that is truer today than ever. The Mustang GT Supercar is ready to race in 2023.”

Some dramatic aerodynamic upgrades have been made to the Mustang to make it race-ready. For example, there is a pronounced splitter at the front and a custom-made hood with striking cooling openings. One of the most notable changes visible from the side are the extended skirts and the new black center-closing wheels. The upgrades continue at the rear with a towering wing and dramatic diffuser.

“We are very proud to show the world our new Mustang Supercar, and where better to do it than at the Great Race here at Mount Panorama,” added Andrew Birkic, Chief Executive of Ford Australia and New Zealand. “It is a special moment to be able to discover this car for passionate Ford fans, together with all our Supercars drivers. It is very appropriate that Dick is going to drive his first laps with the car this afternoon. He is a legend of the sport and an incredible ambassador for Ford.”
