GM’s Cruise starts charging fares for driverless rides in San Francisco

General Motors Co’s Cruise has begun charging fees for driverless rides in San Francisco, the company said Thursday, a step toward commercializing the service.

Earlier this month, Cruise became the first company to be licensed to charge self-driving car rides in the U.S. city, after it allayed objections from local officials.

Self-driving test cars with drivers for human safety have become a constant sight in San Francisco, and fully self-driving cars are also becoming more common. Turning them into a startup business in a major American city, marks a milestone in the long, delayed journey to driverless taxi service.

The driverless rides are currently taking place in the northwestern third of the city, the self-driving tech company said Thursday, adding it would expand the service.
