There are four very unfortunate Mercedes-Benz GLB 250 owners in the United States who drive around in SUVs without vehicle stability control and ABS.
The carmaker has revealed that the ESP control module may have been damaged in the logistics process and moisture may leak into the ESP unit and further damage its internal components. This means that functions such as vehicle stability control and ABS can be deactivated, while also increasing the risk of fire due to an internal short circuit.

Mercedes-Benz began investigating the issue in October 2020 when GLB models with ESP failures were detected during the vehicle’s end-of-line test. It was later determined that the ESP units had been damaged during the removal of the vehicles at the assembly plant and it was concluded that no vehicles in the field were affected by the problem. However, an October 2021 investigation found that serial number data from select ESP units showed field failure. Production records subsequently revealed that the affected ESP units had in fact been damaged during factory handling and then installed.
The four recalled Mercedes-Benz GLB models were produced between October 19, 2020 and October 20, 2020.
Owners of these vehicles will be notified of the voluntary recall before November 11, 2022. Local dealers will replace the ESP unit free of charge to fix the problem, while a change in the manufacturing process means vehicles produced from October 26, 2020 may not suffer from the same issue.
