Chevrolet has recalled the 2013-2015 Spark and 2014-2015 Spark EV due to their hood latches. This is the second recall related to this part, as the vehicle manufacturer’s first repair was found to be unsatisfactory.
GM first recalled 120,688 of the vehicles in 2014 due to a flaw that allowed their secondary hood lock lever to corrode prematurely. Of course, that’s a concern because if the part fails, it can deform the hood locking pin, causing it to stick out of position.
In the worst cases, the latch could fail and the hood could open while the vehicle is in motion, greatly increasing the risk of a crash. Chevrolet therefore decided to replace the hood latch and hood latch on vehicles where corrosion was detected.

However, a new recall notice filed on August 25, 2022 suggests that the initial recall did not sufficiently resolve the issue. The automaker opened a new product investigation into the issue on May 10 after finding field reports of corrosive hood latches.
It reviewed data from warranty claims, legal claims and other official sources and identified 276 field reports worldwide related to this condition. Between January 2, 2015 and May 25, 2022, it found there were 22 crash charges and one claimed minor injuries related to this issue. In the US, 116,223 Chevrolet Sparks are participating in this promotion, as well as 4,465 Spark EVs.
As a result, it has decided to launch another recall to try and fix this issue for good. Chevrolet will be contacting customers beginning October 10 and asking them to return to their local dealer to have their hood closers and hood latches replaced as needed. The new parts receive a new protective coating with improved corrosion resistance properties.
