Ford knows that owners of the Bronco 2-Door and 4-Door will be modifying their rigs. Some will likely start changing as soon as they touch the keys. Others keep it in stock, but chances are a future owner will want to add accessories anyway. This expectation for mods is why Ford is rolling out its pre-wired upfitter switch system today.
Each Bronco is available with up to six pre-wired upfitter switches. These are standard on Black Diamond, Wildtrak, Badlands and First Edition trims. However, you have to pay $ 195 to get them equipped at a Base of Outer Banks – a small price for potentially huge convenience down the road.
Why are they useful? Ford has pre-wired all of these switches to make adding accessories as close to a plug and play operation as possible. There is a terminal connection on the front for a bumper light bar. One wire goes to the A-pillar / roof for transom beams or floodlights. Another goes to the rear cargo area for any power supply to accessories you might want to have behind it. And there is also a connection point for the glove compartment, in case you need it (maybe for a dashboard camera). Ford says the upfitter system has one 30 amp, one 15 amp, and four 10 amp fused circuits. The idea with these pre-wired connections is that you don’t have to drill holes through the firewall to get cables through. Everything is also securely and professionally wired by Ford, not by you in your garage, no matter how nice that may seem.
Compared to the Jeep Wrangler, Ford offers two additional upfitter switches. Jeep owners only have four to choose from. No surprises here – Ford had to buy a Jeep, of course. Like the Bronco, Jeep pre-wires these switches to frequently used places in the vehicle.
