VW Lamando “5XL” is almost 10 feet wide and no it is not photoshopped

Volkswagen sells a compact sedan in China, the Lamando L, which should be a sportier-looking counterpart to the Jetta, just as the Arteon is a coupe-like Passat. And like the Arteon to the Passat, the Lamando L should have a longer wheelbase than the Jetta (called the Sagitar in China). However, a TikTok user was not happy with this announced extra size, so he decided to build a bigger one.

The “Lamando 5XL”, as user @justinbuildcars calls his creation, looks like it should be a product of photoshop, but it’s supposedly real. And to prove it, one of his videos even shows him standing in the engine compartment where the extra space was added.

With a claimed width of nearly 3 meters (9.84 ft), the wonderfully outlandish Lamando is almost twice as wide as the 1,831 meters (6 ft) Lamando L, which itself is already a bit wider than the Jetta. The car gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘widebody’, and it makes good use of that extra space.

Instead of the typical setup of two in the front and three in the back, the Lamando 5XL converts the front passenger seat into a 2-seater bench seat and adds 2 additional seats to the rear bench seat. That makes for a total capacity of 8 passengers compared to the normal 5, but @justinbuildcars claimed it could carry 10 people without any problems.

Overall, the build craftsmanship is quite impressive, with both the interior and exterior looking like they came straight from the factory. There are no visible seams on the extended parts of the Lamando and all the added components look like they fit together nicely. In addition, despite the extension being applied only to one side of the car, the body manages to remain symmetrical.

That said, we don’t really know how this car drives, as a clip of the half-empty engine bay appears to show what appears to be the passenger-side front wheel with no driveshaft attached.

Maybe the car is only one-wheel drive now, or maybe they’ll just push it from behind before the video starts, like some manufacturer of electric semi-trucks. Both options would explain why it always moves at relatively slow speeds in its videos, but regardless of the propulsion, if real this build is still incredibly unique, and we commend the time and effort put into it, even if it can driving under your own power.
