Happy summer solstice, everyone! To celebrate this, we have linked a particularly unusual eBay search to the Pontiac Solstice sports car. A salesperson has left an inventory of fiberglass hardtops designed to turn the Pontiac Solstice roadster into a shooting brake. The salesperson says they came from a company that has since closed in Indiana, and they are clearly inspired by another aftermarket component and even a GM concept that never saw the light of day.
We start from the beginning: the stillborn Chevy Nomad concept. It was a concept that came out at the same time as the original Solstice concept, and it was clearly based on the same platform, with a small two-door body and a long nose. It also had unabashedly retro Nomad wagon design elements and directions from the original Corvette. The car has never seen production, but it was clear that people were interested in a car-like sports car.
That brings us to the next piece of history with an aftermarket hardtop developed by the German EDAG. We saw a prototype in person and the overall shape seemed to fit in the car – and the enveloping window design certainly seemed Nomadic. In addition to the unique look, the hardtop and the functional hatch made the miniscule loading space of the Solstice roadster much more usable. However, it does not seem that many of the tops were sold.
These tops on eBay are very similar to the EDAG tops, although it is not clear whether they are a direct replica or something like that. As the parts are remnants of inventory, the seller notes that some of the tops are missing pieces for installation, so only those who are handy with bodywork and fasteners, or who can lean on someone who is, must submit an application. Even with a little extra work, if you really want a Solstice shooting brake, this is probably easier and cheaper than ordering a store to build a custom roof for you.
