The next step of McLaren Automotive in its drive for electrification is its most extreme vehicle ever.
The Speedtail, a petrol-electric hybrid of 1,035 hp, is in many ways a tribute to the iconic F1 of the nineties.
First is the configuration of the seats. In the tear-shaped cockpit are three carbon fiber saddles – one in the middle for the driver, flanked by two slightly behind for passengers. The F1 was arranged in the same way.
The next is the scarcity: only 106 are planned for production. The number is considerable: so many F1's were sold.
All Speedtails are already reserved. Prices start around $ 2.1 million, and deliveries from McLaren's manufacturing center in Woking, England, should begin early in 2020, the automaker said.
Due to the layout of the high resolution seats and digital cameras, instead of the exterior mirrors – features that do not comply with US safety regulations – a McLaren spokesperson said that each Speedtail should be imported separately under a "Show of Display" "rule that limits on public roads lead to no more than 2,500 miles per year.
Approximately one third of the Speedtails go to North America, according to the spokesman.
McLaren's first introduction to hybrids was the P1, which was introduced in 2013. The plug-in hybrid had a combined 903 hp.
McLaren says the Speedtail reaches 186 km / h in a stunning 12.8 seconds and can reach the top with 250 mph, making it the fastest McLaren ever.
A carbon fiber body, aluminum suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes – even lightweight leather – all help minimize the weight of the vehicle. McLaren says the Speedtail is only 3.153 kilos dry.
Buyers of Speedtail can specify seat properties up to the stitch pattern and hand-mixed paint used to cut edges of the leather.
Another design element unique to the Speedtail is the location of the engine start button and the control buttons for opening the windows and doors: they are all located in panels above the driver's head.
