Tuning companies that modify supercars are a dime a dozen, so to speak. 1016 Industries stands out though, because instead of just adding some glitzy finish and an ECU tune, it goes a lot further. Now it takes Jay Leno on a complete tour of his carbon-built McLaren 720S.
In the eyes of many, the McLaren 720S does not need any kind of modification. It develops 710 hp (529 kW) and can sprint from 0-60 (96 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds. It will cover the quarter mile in 9.98 and has a top speed of 212 mph (341 km/h). 1016 Industries wanted to improve that performance, but it didn’t require a minimalist approach.
It is clear that the entire body of the 720S has been replaced with carbon fiber. As Peter Northrop, CEO of 1016 Industries tells Leno, the company saved about 75 pounds (34 kg) on the doors alone by replacing them with carbon units. In total, they stripped the original car of about 400 pounds (181 kg).
However, they didn’t just stop at weight savings. The car is 120mm wider than standard and the track is also wider, 90mm at the front and 120mm at the rear. 1016 Industries also worked with McLaren’s suspension supplier Eibach to ensure the changes were optimized for track and street use.
In addition, the team has added a functional fixed wing spoiler in the rear. In order for it to work, they had to run the original spoiler hydraulics inside the new fixed wing. This keeps the integrated hydraulics of the suspension and transmission working properly.
On top of the whole car is a roof scoop that is not functional in a traditional way. It doesn’t send air into the engine, but it does help make the airflow around the car smooth and quiet while giving that cool roof scoop look.
Under the hood, 1016 Industries can boost performance to 1150 horsepower (857 kW) with upgraded turbochargers, intercoolers, racing fuel and more. Leno offers his congratulations and thanks for the opportunity to drive the car. It really is one of the most comprehensive mod packs we’ve seen.
