Nikola announced details on Tuesday about its hydrogen fuel cell product range that includes vehicles with a range of up to 900 miles.
The line-up includes a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) variant of Nikola’s Tre Cabover truck range and Nikola Two FCEV Sleeper, a long-haul freight transporter, for the North American market.
The company’s Tre battery electric vehicle (BEV) variant currently travels up to 300 miles.
The first Tre FCEV prototype construction will begin in the second quarter, with testing and validation continuing through 2022, the company said, adding that production is scheduled to start in the second half of 2023.
Nikola said his Tre FCEV Cabover is intended for distances up to 500 miles, while the Sleeper allows for a non-stop range of up to 900 miles.
In December, the company ended a deal with Republic Services to develop electric refuse trucks for the recycling and waste disposal company.
All of this follows last year’s announcement that General Motors was buying a state in Nikola, a deal that was quickly reversed after a short-seller accused Nikola of fraud, causing founder Trevor Milton to resign and begin a federal investigation.
