2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali interior spied with dramatic redesign

The 2022 GMC Sierra interior overhaul comes into focus with these new spy footage revealing a totally new dashboard.

GMC teased a few changes when it announced that Super Cruise was coming to the Sierra 2022, but only a limited part was visible in the carefully cropped photo. These spy footage tells a fuller story of what’s going on in the new GMC pickup. We are immediately drawn to the new center console, which is nothing like the truck’s current design.

There is a new widescreen infotainment system nicely integrated into the dashboard, just below new thin air vents. It appears to be running a version of Android Automotive. The Google Assistant balloon is visible in the top left corner and a Google login screen is displayed on the far right. GMC clearly still prioritizes hard buttons and buttons for all essential controls. A large, knurled volume rocker is located on the left side of the screen. And the climate control layout is all knobs and buttons with glossy black and chrome accents. This, along with the angled surfaces, classifies it a bit from today’s sea of flat black center console buttons. Even the start button appears to be dressed in chrome.

Another big change to the center console is the introduction of a gear stick that replaces the steering column mounted shifter. The new shifter looks in leather, shiny plastic and chrome accents. There’s a part of us that will miss the chunky truck-like handling of the column-mounted shifter, but this new design is definitely more suited to a luxury pickup. And as far as we can tell, this Sierra is the luxury oriented Denali upholstery. Its external features betray it with the ostentatious grille treatment and chrome moldings.

We still don’t know which of these features we’re seeing here will be exclusive to the Denali, but the digital instrument cluster seems like a given, but will likely be available further down the trim tree. This replaces the truck’s current tired looking gauges with a vibrant and neatly integrated screen. Super Cruise, as it is in the whole line of GM cars that offer it, also looks optional – this Denali doesn’t have the fancy light-up steering wheel or controls for it.

It’s worth noting that this Denali’s interior can be different from the rest of the Sierra line-up. GM already did that with the redesigned Yukon, giving the top model a different look than the rest of the moldings. It’s also hard to say how similar or different this interior is from the redesigned interior of the Silverado we spied a while ago – a common theme is bigger, better screens. Regardless, we’re happy to see GM fix its truck’s biggest weakness with the mid-cycle refresh. With its many excellent powertrains, the Sierra looks set to soon become a much more formidable opponent in the truck wars.
